Introduction to Majordomo

The Majordomo server at Kendra Electronic Wonderworks provides automated support for the mailing lists hosted by us. Users can subscribe, signoff, and (with the exception of UUPC-Announce) submit e-mail to be redistributed to all subscribers of the lists.

Site policy requires:

All subscription requests must be confirmed by the target address. The server sends exact instructions how to confirm the subscription when it gets the subscribe command. This prevents the practice of mail bombing, where a victim is subscribed to hundreds of mailing lists without their permission or even foreknowledge.
You must belong to a mailing list to submit posts to it. This prevents SPAM from being submitted.

Getting detailed instructions

To get started, send mail to majordomo@kew.com, with the following in the body of the mail:

help

The server will respond with its help file via mail.

Joining and Leaving Mailing Lists

Available Mailing lists

Most of the Majordomo commands operate on a particular mailing lists. The lists you can specify for list-name at Kendra Electronic Wonderworks include:

UUPC-Announce
Major announcements about UUPC/extended. Only our staff can post to this list. All users not subscribed not UUPC-Info or UUPC-Info-Digest should subscribe to UUPC-Announce to be notified of new releases and the like.

UUPC-Info
General information about UUPC/extended; both users and our staff can post to this list.

UUPC-Info-Digest
A digest format version of UUPC-Info; messages are batched together and sent weekly (or more often if volume dictates).

UUPC-Hackers
Extended discussion for UUPC/extended users. Discussions of third party products and other tangential topics are encouraged on this list (as opposed to UUPC-Info).

Ki-Info
Discussions related to Aikido and Ki.

Addresses in Commands

The following commands all support an mailing-address operand; you can usually omit this, in which case the address defaults to the sender (your) address on the mail message to Majordomo.

Subscribing to mailing lists

To subscribe to a mailing list, send Majordomo in the body of the mail:

subscribe list-name mailing-address

Signing off from mailing lists

To signoff from a mailing list, send Majordomo in the body of the mail:

unsubscribe list-name mailing-address

Examples

The following, sent as mail to majordomo@kew.com, would ask for detailed help from Majordomo, and subscribe the current user to both UUPC-Info and UUPC-Hackers:
